Residents and staff enjoyed a slightly rainy BBQ in Haywards Heath this week to help raise money for people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in London.

Despite the lack of sun, it was a great afternoon with residents and staff from the Mid Sussex Resettlement service coming together at Maunsell Court in Haywards Heath for burgers, salad, home-grown strawberries and a raffle.

They had already planned the event but then decided to try and raise some money for people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire so set up a raffle, with all the proceeds being donated. There were lots of prizes on offer and at the end of the afternoon they had managed to raise over £120!

The Mid-Sussex Resettlement service offers people with enduring mental health issues support through supported housing and visiting support. Residents have come from a range of different backgrounds, including institutions and long-term hospital stays, and are supported to help improve their independent living skills.

Neil has been living at Maunsell Court for six months, having moved from Croydon to be nearer his family. A keen gardener, Neil has an allotment and grows a range of fruit and vegetables, including the delicious strawberries on offer at the BBQ.

He has been receiving a range of support from the staff and has already seen a difference

I moved here from a partly residential service and am now much more independent. I am looking forward to moving on as I feel I have made real progress since moving in.

Christopher, another resident, had previously been living in a 24 hour residential rehab placement for three years. The move into Maunsell Court was planned to help Chris achieve more independence. Since making the move Christopher feels he has; “Grown a lot. I don’t need 24 hour support anymore.”

Along with a passion for amateur radio and volunteering once a week at the local Phoenix Club for people with mental health issues, Chris is also starting a carpentry and joinery course at Central Sussex College in Crawley in September.

Despite the weather, it was a great afternoon with lots of prizes won in the raffle. Hopefully next time we might even have some sun!
