Staff from the Family Mosaic Essex floating support service in Brentwood are volunteering in a new project to help people with mental health issues in the area.

The Colour Me In Café is held every Friday at the Brentwood Theatre Café from 11.00am – 2.00pm and offers visitors the chance to socialise, meet friends and enjoy the new craze of adult colouring in. Along with this, visitors can be signposted to services in the area that might be of help to them.

The weekly drop-in is organised by the Community Tree partnership, a group of local agencies offering a variety of support to the community. The group includes Brentwood Community Print, Therapy for You, ECHO, MIND, CAB, Essex Advocacy and many more, and the Colour Me In Café is a joint activity staffed by a rota of people from these organisations.

The partnership has also produced a leaflet called Help, who can I turn to? which has been circulated to GP surgeries, pharmacies and the local council offices as well as community areas such as libraries and the local Job Centre. The aim being to provide information on the different support organisations available within the area.

The atmosphere in the café is very relaxed with calming music in the background. Visitors are provided with colouring pens and books free of charge but the books are left at the end of each session. Carers are also welcome to accompany visitors and people can stay as long as they like during the three hour session.

Currently three members of staff from the various agencies volunteer at the café but it is hoped that eventually visitors to the drop-in will feel confident and empowered enough to volunteer at the sessions themselves.

A Community Tree meeting is held several times a year at Brentwood Council for representatives of the organisations to come together and discuss issues facing the local area and to work on ways to increase partnership working to meet the local needs of the community.

A big thank you to the Brentwood Theatre Café for offering the use of their space every week.
