With a lot of hard work from our Social Inclusion team and an extremely generous donation from a chicken restaurant that wishes to remain unnamed (a fantastically selfless act from them), every week staff pick up a massive donation of chicken from the restaurant and provide a meal to our homeless clients completely free of charge.
The actual meal can vary; last week they served chicken with sticky rice and a lemon and herb gravy, and this week chicken wraps with salad and potato wedges. Staff believe they are offering a really unique opportunity for our homeless customers, as now they are guaranteed a decent hot meal every Tuesday.
The turnout has been really great so far with 80 people coming along in the first two weeks! And now that the word has got out, the team are expecting it to get even busier in the future.
Organisers of the lunch, Craig Lynch, the Family Mosaic health and wellbeing project officer, and support worker Chantelle Fitter, are blown away by the generosity of the donors:
It’s massively heart-warming to see that such a generous act from a restaurant chain can create such joy in something that most of us would take for granted. Something as simple as a free hot meal once a week could be the first stepping stone to a better quality of life for these people. That’s what makes all the hard work worthwhile.
The feedback from the customers has also been fantastic, with one saying:
That was the biggest meal I’ve had for months, and it was delicious. I can’t believe that it was free!
The team are hoping to carry on with the scheme indefinitely as the restaurant gives such a generous donation every week. They are also looking to start working with the Family Mosaic employment team to marry the lunch with training for customers to help them find jobs and a home.
