The West Sussex Domiciliary Care service, based in Prescott House (above) in Burgess Hill and Arthur Bliss House in Lindfield, has successfully achieved a ‘good’ Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating during its recent inspection.

The service provides a responsive care service to 45 customers with long-term physical care needs and staff are on site at the schemes 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This involves a high level of support and commitment from all the staff.

About the inspection

CQC inspections ask five different questions during their visit: is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. They then comment on how the service deals with each of these questions and then writes up its findings in a report.

During the unannounced inspection visit, the CQC inspectors spoke to 11 customers, one relative, eight staff members and the registered manager. They also reviewed the paperwork associated with the service including medication records, accidents, incident and safeguarding and staff training records and rotas.

Final report

The final report noted that both Prescott House and Arthur Bliss House provided person centred care that was responsive to the customers’ needs and wishes. Customers are supported and encouraged to pursue their interests and join in with the many social events organised at the schemes such as a recent visit from a local nursery school and the setting up of an on-site shop, staffed by volunteers from Prescott House.

The report also acknowledged that staff treated customers kindly and with respect and compassion with one commenting: “I have no worries because I know the carers would help me.” This is especially important due to the personal nature of the service and the fact that some customers are also supported with end of life care.

Emma Gould, the Head of Service in Sussex, recognises the hard work that has gone in to making the service efficient and safe along with retaining the sense of being homes rather than institutions:

Our job here is, of course, to make sure our customers are safe and well cared for. But that’s the least we can do; we want our customers to thrive, reach their goals and enjoy their lives – just like anyone else.

The staff team here work incredibly hard every single day to support our customers in the best way they can and this had been recognised by this CQC report. I am incredibly proud of this hard work and it’s so lovely to have this recognition.

But perhaps the best description of the service comes from John, a resident, who describes the care service from his point of view:

 I think everything about the service is very professional. The staff are very conscious of how we need to look after ourselves and everything they do is just for us. The care workers are marvellous!

This is another great inspection result and demonstrates the ongoing hard work and dedication that staff put into caring for some of the most vulnerable people in the local community.
